Liquorice, also called licorice, is used in folk medicine as an expectorant and secretolytic agent for inflammation of the respiratory tract and coughing caused by colds.

It is also used for gastrointestinal ailments and ulcers of the stomach and duodenum.

It is believed that the herb has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, which is why it is used for inflammatory reactions caused by histamine and serotonin.
